PLUMBING

Service to the new middle is gained by connecting to the existing 8” water line loop that wraps around the high school. An 8” water line loop also surrounds the new building. The domestic service line enters the west side of the building where the Mechanical Room is located. This is also the location of the Fire Protection and Natural Gas Service line. Three domestic water heaters are in place to provide hot water to the building.

ARCHITECTURE

The new Ringgold Middle School is a 32’ tall, two-story structure with varying roof heights, as portions of the building remain at a one-story height. A large courtyard is located at the center of the building, giving occupants access to the outdoors. The school features a grand entrance that sits on columns and extends out from the building in a radius-like fashion. This centerpiece stands apart from the rest of the building with unique windows across its face, and school colors on display. From within, the school houses 54 classrooms, a cafeteria, a full size gymnasium, auditorium, media center, and administrative space. Nearly every space has access to windows, allowing for daylight use and occupant comfort. The interior layout of the spaces within the building is effective in terms of designating areas of the building and allowing for proper navigation between spaces. The new Middle School is now located on the same campus as Ringgold’s High School, both of which are located just north of the school’s stadium and ball field.

Major National Codes: 2009 International Building Code

Zoning: A-1 Agricultural District

BUILDING ENCLOSURE

WALL MATERIALS

Ringgold Middle School employs several different types of wall materials on its exterior. Face brick with accent bands is predominant on all facades of the building, along with cast stone panels and metal wall panels. The metal wall panels are seen especially at the entrance of the building. The metal panel system consists of an aluminum panel that incorporates a rainscreen system. An exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS) is also used on the exterior for ceilings that are exposed to the elements.

WINDOWS

Aluminum windows are specified for each type of window on the project, which all include insulated tempered tinted glass as the glazing material. Depending on the window type, either a cast stone or metal flashing sill is installed.

ROOFING

Thermoplastic Membrane Roofing

The roofing system being put in place on the middle school is a single-ply membrane roofing system, consisting of a 50 mil single-ply membrane. This membrane covers the roofing insulation, which is a polyisocyanurate foam core insulation with specified thicknesses. The roofing system also employs a metal fascia system.

Standing Seam Metal Roof

A standing seam metal roof system is also being put in place on this project for the small fitness room addition for Ringgold’s High School. This metal roof system is on #15 felt paper with ice and water guard, with roofing and nailbase insulation. The layers of insulation are laid out with staggered joints for further thermal protection.

SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES

This project is not a LEED or Green Globes project, but still contains sustainable features in its design. Located centrally in the new Middle School is a 33’ by 176’ courtyard. This space provides a huge sustainability feature in that it is a place for the building’s occupants to enjoy the outdoors, and can also serve as an educational space. Giving occupants access to the outdoors has the ability to increase comfort levels. The site also provides adequate landscaping, which again adds to the projects sustainability features by giving the site a healthy feeling.

PART II

CONSTRUCTION

As stated under the Project Delivery section above, this project is structured under the Design-Bid-Build delivery method. Since this is a public project, the Pennsylvania Separations Act is in place. This act requires that public entities solicit separate bids and award separate contracts for each trade on construction projects exceeding $4,000.

The owner (Ringgold School District) holds contracts with the Architect, Construction Manager, and each Prime Contractor: General, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Food Service Equipment, and Fire Protection. The contracts between the owner and each project player are lump sum contracts (AIA Standard Form of Agreement Between Owner and Contractor).

The figure to the right shows the organizational structure on the project.

STRUCTURAL

Steel framing supports the second floor and roof of the middle school. The structural steel system consists of W shape beams/columns and various joist systems (K, KCS, LH Series). The steel joist systems typically bear on concrete block walls. The core of the building (Area A) is where the main system of W-shape structural bays are located. The steel joist systems branch off these areas.

The foundation system for the middle school consists of strip footers, concrete walls, and spread footers with piers. Depending on location, formwork may consist of traditional timber formwork or formwork panels in wall locations. Where acceptable, strip footers utilize the earth as formwork. Concrete is placed using two methods: direct chute or pumped. The same goes for all other concrete work consisting of sidewalk, curbs, slab on grade, and slab on deck.

HVAC

The HVAC system consists of strategically placed air handling units on the roof that are fed by centrally located boiler/chiller systems. Five Energy Recovery Units are in place to serve the classroom space. There are also seven different Rooftop Air Handling Units serving the gym, band space, auditorium, media center, and cafeteria. The only piece of equipment placed on the ground exterior is the 16’ high cooling tower, which was preferred by the district.

ELECTRICAL

Electrical service for the new middle school is being extended from the high school’s transformer pole with new overhead electrical lines. Primary service enters a utility owned, 23 KV transformer from a utility pole through an underground ductbank. The secondary side of the utility transformer enters the building and goes to a 3000 amp, 277/480V MDS (Main Distribution Switchboard). This MDS distributes power to necessary panels and to a 500 KVA transformer that feeds a Sub Distribution Panel with 120/208V power. A new Emergency Generator is also in place. This exterior diesel generator is a 175 KW/219 KVA 277/480V machine that uses two 60A and 225A ATS’s to transfer power.

FIRE PROTECTION

The fire protection system in place for this building is a wet pipe sprinkler system, which conforms to the Uniform Construction Code - NFPA 13. In a wet-pipe system, automatic sprinklers are connected to piping containing water that is connected to a water supply. Water discharges immediately upon a sprinkler head being activated. A 6" fire protection service water line enters the west side of the building, where it then hits a double check backflow preventer valve and then branches off to serve the different zones of the building. The building also features a Siemencs "Cerberus Pro" Fire Alarm System.

TRANSPORTATION

One holeless hydraulic elevator will be installed in the building. This elevator has a 4,500 pound rated load. The elevator is located in the central portion of the building.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS

The telecommunication system consists of (5) MDF Racks and (IDF) Racks. This equipment is designed and installed to serve telephone switching, intercom, clock system, TV headend equipment, building wide TV distribution, and owner furnished equipment. All voice and data wiring will consist of CAT 6 cable.
